Road Israel has an excellent road network, and because the country is relatively small with varied scenery, driving can be a great pleasure. However, the roads can be very congested, so motorists are advised to allow plenty of time for journeys. Traffic drives on the right and road rules are similar to those in Western Europe and North America. The minimum legal driving age in Israel is 18 and the maximum legal alcohol to blood ratio for driving is 0.5?. Seat belts must be worn by all passengers at all times and children under 12 should not travel in front seats unless in a special baby carrier. Road signs are international and signposting is in Arabic, Hebrew and English. Distances are given in kilometres. In built-up areas the speed limit is 50kph (31mph) rising to 80kph (50mph) on open roads. Visitors are advised to carry an International Driving Permit, although it is not compulsory. A departure tax of about NIS60 is payable for those who leave Israel by land if they have arrived by air.
